Anatomy
Intensive with Dr. Josh Akin & Sharyn Galindo
Friday, March 12th, 2010; 1:00–5:00pm
Saturday, March 13th, 2010; 11:15am–3:00pm [$150]
This Anatomy Intensive is material applied specifically
to the movements of yoga asana. Although we will explore the
poses in the Ashtanga Primary Series and some of Intermediate
Series, the application is "non-denominational" and
works equally well for any Vinyasa Practice. This workshop
allows the details of Western anatomy to be more directly useful
to the yoga teacher or practitioner, and has great explanatory
power for analyzing asana and problems with asana, adjustments
in the poses, and therapeutic applications. The intent of this
workshop is to convey a "lens" on anatomy that is
immediately useful for the yoga teacher or student.
A pose-by-pose exploration of the complete
primary series will be a main feature of this workshop, with
a detailed review of the principles of dynamic alignment and
an emphasis on the musculature of each asana.
More specifically, we will:
- Explore basic anatomical terms relating to
the mechanics of movement.
- Review stretching physiology & stretching
biomechanics
- Assess form & function of the skeleton & major
joints
- Review the deep inner and outer core musculature
- Analyze the muscular anatomy posture
by posture:
- What muscles should be active in the asana?
- What muscles should be released and lengthened?
- What are common injuries?
- What are the common obstacles of the pose?
- What needs to open to do the pose?
